The following images show a nearest neighbor interface I wrote with Python & pyOpenGL a few months ago.  Nearest neighbor is a fairly simple and commonly used algorithm with applications in pattern recognition, machine learning, DNA sequencing and many others.  I was specifically looking at comparing brute force search with the Kd-Tree algorithm for partitioning 3 dimensional spaces with nearest neighbors.  The visualizer places points in a 3dimensional array with user input to dynamically increase/decrease the number of field points & attractor points.  The colored spheres represent the attractor points and the smaller points represent the field.  As the user increases/decreases the number of field and/or attractor points they can dynamically calculate the nearest neighbors using either the brute force or Kd-tree search algorithms.  The field points will change color to indicate that particular point’s nearest neighbor.  The user can orbit the space and zoom in/out as they adjust the number of points and attractions.

The hyperplane direction is chosen in the following way: every node in the tree is associated with one of the k-dimensions, with the hyperplane perpendicular to that dimension’s axis. So, for example, if for a particular split the “x” axis is chosen, all points in the subtree with a smaller “x” value than the node will appear in the left subtree and all points with larger “x” value will be in the right sub tree. In such a case, the hyperplane would be set by the x-value of the point, and its normal would be the unit x-axis.” – Wikipedia

A quick update on my current research….

Logic Matter :

Digital Logic as heuristics for physical self-guided-assembly

Given the increasing complexity of the physical structures surrounding our everyday environment; buildings, machines, computers and almost every other physical object that humans interact with, the processes of assembling these complex structures are inevitably caught in a battle of time, complexity and human/machine processing power.  If we are to keep up with this exponential growth in construction complexity we need to develop automated assembly logic embedded within our material parts to aid in construction.  In this thesis I introduce Logic Matter as a system of passive mechanical digital logic modules for self-guided-assembly of large-scale structures.  As opposed to current systems in self-reconfigurable robotics, Logic Matter introduces scalability, robustness, redundancy and local heuristics to achieve passive assembly.  I propose a mechanical module that implements digital NAND logic as an effective tool for encoding local and global assembly sequences.  I then show a physical prototype that successfully demonstrates the described mechanics, encoded information and passive self-guided-assembly.  Finally, I show exciting potentials of Logic Matter as a new system of computing with applications in space/volume filling, surface construction, and 3D circuit assembly.

The Passive Folder is a recent development in the line of programmable matter, 1D folding chain, systems.  The Passive Folder maintains the full functionality of its previous ancestors i.e. 3 locking positions of rotation, full programmability/functionality at every node, the ability to construct any given 1D, 2D or 3D geometry from a single 1D input string.  However, the Passive Folder aimes at scalability for large-scale assembly and thus attempts to save construction time and cost while eliminating its reliance on electromechanical systems.  The Passive Folder relies on human constructability and on-site physical programming (pull & rotate mechanism) to transform between any given geometries.  This removes the cost for electronics and high torque motors that struggle to fight excessive moment forces that can lead to unit failure at any point along the chain.  The simple pull & rotate mechanism allows anyone to simply program each unit by separating each female-to-female unit, then rotating to any of the 3 locking positions and releasing.  Any desired geometry can be written as a string of angles or instructions for the user.  By starting at one end and walking along the chain, programming each node, angle sequences are locked in-place, resulting in the overall desired geometry.

The Passive Folder was constructed using:

-Waterjet cut (30) 2′x3′ sheets of white powder coated aluminum

-1800 black rivets

-Each connected with a 4″x4″ black turntable bearing

The Passive Folder was built under the Milli-Biology project in Neil Gershenfeld’s Center for Bits and Atoms, MIT.

The Decibot is part of the larger *bot family of programmable matter 1D folding chains.  The *bot family contains electromechanical folding @ nm, mm, cm, dm part lengths. The decibot is the largest of the family with overall dimensions of 144″x18″x18″ unfolded and 36″x36″x36″ folded into a cube.

Decibot was built under the Milli-Biology project in Neil Gershenfeld’s Center for Bits and Atoms, MIT.   Decibot was presented with the rest of the *bot family at DARPA’s InfoChemistry conference under the topic of Programmable Matter.

A progress report on the quest for coded assembly.  A first mock-up of chain assembly  (only 3 units of thousands) and one that is finally alive (although barely breathing!).  A number of earlier studies below and more to come in the following weeks.  Many thanks to Kenny Cheung, Jonathan Ward, Max Lobovsky, Steffen Reichert and many others.

The movement, although slow, shows potential for a full range of motion in only  2 units.  Stronger stepper motors are needed to provide more torque for lifting motion.

Earlier studies on tensioning systems for self-organization.  Single strands are wound within each module and snap into place with male/female connections.  Danzer modules force accurate angles and internal motors act as the winding force.  1. Additive friction 2. a necessity for deterministic structures and 3. a static final form led us away from tensioning systems toward protein folding. Successes:

-Working continuous servo motor, controlled through potentiometers

-Working electromagnets for latching mechanism per edge

-Working, soldered and printed circuit board

-Programmed AVR  microcontroller with PWM output for servos

-Fabricated and functioning gears & bearings per edge

Problems/Potentials:

-Electromagnets fail to maintain the edge axis when the gears engage and rotate

-Possibly a solenoid connection rather than electromagnets

-Possibly two motors or latches per edge in order to stabilize during rotation

-Electromagnets require approximately 20v, where circuit & servos only need 9v

-Potential for sensors on each face which dictate the on/off state for the electromagnets & servos

First images from a current project on self-aggregation modules.  

Each component includes a servo & electromagnet per edge.  A servo rotates an electromagnet on edge 1 of unit A which is connected to unit B’s electromagnet & edge 1 which then rotates the entire unit B.  As unit B locks into position unit A’s electromagnet is negatively charged on edge 1 while A’s electromagnet on edge 2 is positively charged to lock unit B into place.  Unit A’s servo then rotates on edge 2 which rotates the entire unit B and iterates through the previous steps…. (Lock magA, rotate servoA, lock magB, unlock magA, rotate servoB, lock magC, unlock magB, rotate servoC, loop)

Each unit has the capability of climbing neighboring units and self-assembling based on levels of attraction, repulsion, stabilization/destabilization, spatial constraint etc etc…

An aggregate is a collection of items that are gathered together to form a total quantity.

Self-assembly is a term used to describe processes in which a disordered system of pre-existing components forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of specific, local interactions among the components themselves, without external direction.

Self-organization is a process of attraction and repulsion in which the internal organization of a system, normally an open system, increases in complexity without being guided or managed by an outside source.

-Get tool dimension, step-over, max depth & direction for cut (x,y)

-Extract isocurves of a surface @ the percentage of step-over multiplied by the tool dimension

-For every point along each isocurve check the z depth

-Move each point along the surface based on its z-depth

-Calculate the largest depth & divide by the maximum depth for the tool

-Create stepped isocurves vertically based on the calculated max depth

This will output cut paths for any specified surface while also defining patterning based on surface conditions.

All studies were done in collaboration with Point b design (www.pointbdesign.com).

A number of studies which define a tool path for milling curved surfaces.  The tool path is extracted from isocurves and undulates in response to surface depth creating interlocking patterns on top of a given 3D surface.  This utility was created to control the tool as it describes a cut path across any surface.  This attempts to push CAM software capabilities by specifying tool patterning, estimating machining time, controlling step-over and bit depth, while still milling a desired 3D surface.  All studies were done in collaboration with Point b design.

Tesselion: Adaptive Quadrilateral Flat Panelization.

A new era of digital technology has emerged to enable freedom of design expression. Increasing complexity in surface curvature through rapidly developing digital techniques has enhanced an age old design problem of constructability of non-standard surface geometries. Along with the software for creating this complexity, intelligent capabilities for construction can be utilized through algorithmic and parametric logic. Simultaneously, improvements in fabrication technologies are clearing the way for a fully unified design and construction process. Simultaneously, the possibilities for both design and fabrication are reinvigorating the professional role of the architect.

Tesselion is a built project which demonstrates a system of flat panel tessellation derived from complex surfaces to enable ease in constructability and a directly evolved spatial environment through lighting, programmatic adaptation and structural simplicity. Each panel’s uniqueness is afforded by the efficiency of digital fabrication while coded parametric relationships allow an emergent structural efficiency.

Recently the development of planar quadrilateral meshes has become a strong interest in the architectural community due to their potential ease for constructing complex surfaces. The project responds to this problem and proposes a method for flat panelization of free form surfaces which provides large scale, efficient and economic construction from flat sheet material.

Pushing for the potential growth of a surface based on specific user defined inputs i.e. max ht., area, entry & exit vectors… A number of these thoughts (and more to come) were born from conversations at the Generator.x 2.0 workshop, many thanks!

Here a first (and yet unsuccessful) attempt using recursive growth of a single component.  Would eventually like to have a non-standard component, more toward a number of components, i.e. a directly gained appreciation from the aperiodic vertebrae assembly, not yet completely mass-customization, more assembly & component logic…

Procedure:

-Plot a number of points… may relate to zones within a site, seeds for growth etc.

-Find nearest neighbour from each point

-Create an array of closed curves with a proportion of the nearest neighbour.  As the distance increses from the nearest neighbour increase the z axis of the closed curve.  Effectively creates volumes of space and direct lines of interconnection between zones.  All programmed space sits opposite circulation while optimizing adjacency connections. 

Very simple networking relationship between any given points…develops proximity, circulation, and a strategy for occupation.

A field condition using inverse kinematic skeleton chains which manipulate objects based on proximity with varying weights.

Two distinct directions:

Method 1. Intersections

-Creates a planar tile from the intersections of either four or eight adjacent non-planar surfaces

*By using 8 sided tiles small gaps can be eliminated as it approaches 0 Gaussian curvature, however quickly becomes dirty with intersections etc..

Pro: Very clean connection as all panels share an entire edge with its neighbor

Con: Does not work for all surfaces.  Fails at the transition between positive and negative Gaussian curvature.

Method 2. Planar Quad Mesh:

-Creates planar quadrilateral tiles from a standard point grid

Pro: Creates planar quad mesh for ANY surface & curvature!!!

Con: Panels always meet at a point along a shared edge, however they do NOT share the entire edge.  Points towards a flexible connection and probably small gaps between panels. 

This project investigates the meet-and-greet scenario as a source of inspiration into a world of fashion, attraction and repulsion.  A line of clothing has been developed to provide optimal adaptation in variety of circumstances.  The base layer of clothing includes flexible panels for two states: a fully expanded state to repell unwanted individuals and a collapsed state which creates a provocative aura. The proximity of individuals, vector of orientation, and the level of attraction provide input for the clothing’s expansion and contraction.

The Gaussian curvature, named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, is equal to the product of the principal curvatures, k₁k₂. It has the dimension of 1/length² and is positive for spheres, negative for one-sheet hyperboloids and zero for planes. It determines whether a surface is locally convex (when it is positive) or locally saddle (when it is negative).

The above definition of Gaussian curvature is extrinsic in that it uses the surface’s embedding in R³, normal vectors, external planes etc. Gaussian curvature is however in fact an intrinsic property of the surface, meaning it does not depend on the particular embedding of the surface; intuitively, this means that ants living on the surface could determine the Gaussian curvature. Formally, Gaussian curvature only depends on the Riemannian metric of the surface. This is Gauss‘ celebrated Theorema Egregium, which he found while concerned with geographic surveys and mapmaking.

An intrinsic definition of the Gaussian curvature at a point P is the following: imagine an ant which is tied to P with a short thread of length r. He runs around P while the thread is completely stretched and measures the length C(r) of one complete trip around P. If the surface were flat, he would find C(r) = 2πr. On curved surfaces, the formula for C(r) will be different, and the Gaussian curvature K at the point P can be computed as

Iterations of program studies where a random point is plotted within a 60′x60′ box identified as the focus or presentor.  Two vectors are drawn to this point from pointA(random1,random2,0) & pointsB(random2,random1,0) which demonstrate the circulation directions.  Resultant circles with a 6′ diameter, (representing the human spatial requirement), are cast within the volume as to never intersect with other circles, vectors, or the presentor.  This demonstrates the possible adjacency and organization of presentor & viewer within a given circumstance and site criteria.

While working on a flat panel tesselation script I forgot to add… Rhino.DeleteObject(strPlane)

Somedays work like that…

A further look at fenestration & field.  Flat panel tesselation on an unjulating surface.  Centroid points plotted vertically based on their distance to the 0 axis. Still somewhat triangulated tesselation, hopefully more hardcore paneling to come….not there yet!

-Take any closed polyline

-Create centroid point

-Draw a curve from each vertex to the centroid

-Get the midpoint of each new curve

-Draw a control points curve from each vertex through the midpoint & centroid back through another midpoint and vertex + 1

1.Plot random points within a zone,2.check the distance to specific zones,3.apply a simple sphere to each point and rotate the sphere based on the distance to the original zone,4.move only two points of the surface based on its orientation to the zone….

Effectively creates an informed field demonstrating each specific location and adjacency towards a focal point….

Each point & component in the field condition is locally informed my the site material, z-condition (contour points), and proximity to boundaries.

The program relationship was developed from an L-system where: G = C&S, W = S, D = S, S = D&G&W, C = G&D&S.  The script was stopped when an equal relationship between D&S was found.  A resultant relationship between C&W&G was formed. 

The form was developed through the manipulation of the base component of volume.  The volume was rotated based on its proximity to the boundaries of the site and the vector of orientation was derived from the program zone – end condition.  The program was divided and scaled proportionally based on varying program and spatial requirements.

Another attempt at a spiraling surface fractal.  Each surface is generated from three points: 1. a fractal surface edit point 2. a secondary fractal surface edit point 3. the midpoint of the original surface.  The resultant form demonstrates the spiraling form, however it does not express true cracking of the original surface, as each resultant surface becomes larger than the last. 

Multiple views of another cracking experiment. An infinite loop of cracks which varies the surface rotation based on area condition.

Again, failed attempt, interesting outcome……

A further development in an investigation of fractiles. 

Get original surface, get surface area centroid & edit points, create fractile surfaces, get surface area, move and rotate each resultant surface according to its area & defined by a spiraling base pattern.

A progress review including: process studies, light & skin studies, plan & section,  physical model.

The program calls for a train stop in East Falls, Philadelphia. 

The concept encompasses cyclical and irregular spiraling as an experimentation into spatial organization and built form.

The form includes an interprelated curve spiral as shelter, intersected by an occupyable tangent spiral.

The spiraling surface was unrolled, plotted at 1/16″ scale and spiraled to create a physical representation. 

Varying spiral generations with interprelated curves. 

Intersecting spiral curves were then transformed into resultant lofted surfaces.
